Being in a style rut is something that I’ve been thinking about lately. I feel like I’m in a style rut. It’s been so long since I felt inspired to buy new clothes. Because of that, I’ve defaulted to the same favourites in my wardrobe over and over.
Don’t get me wrong. Falling back on your favourites is not a bad thing; it makes dressing easy. Bonus, I’ve barely spent a cent on clothes for ages. I’m someone who found styling outfits an expression but function over form just isn’t working for me anymore.
I want to have some fun and feel stylish again. Mostly, I want to shake things up! Who’s with me!? Yup, I knew you guys would be in. Awesome. I’ve put together a five-step process you can work through to get reinvigorated in your wardrobe. And most of them won’t cost you a cent!
Essential for knowing what you’ve got, rotating the contents around and moving some forgotten favourites to the front again. It’s an affordable way to shake things up and get out of that style rut; you don’t spend a cent. You could even make some money by selling unwanted items online.
Tear pages out of magazines, visit your favourite blogs or create a new Pinterest board (or two), go nuts. Creating a mood board might be the kick in the bum you needed to change things up. Find inspiration from everywhere, and don’t discount menswear. Seriously, I saw a great post on Manrepeller that will show you how it is done.
Take the items in your wardrobe, current favourites and neglected ones, and layout outfits on your bed. Treat it like a little flat lay project. Start to group items together in a way you haven’t grouped them before. Mix your prints, layer your colours, and try something new. Forget the way you’ve always put your clothes together. Think out of the box.
If you’ve reached the end of your rope with the same items, put them in a box or suitcase and stash them away. Set yourself a challenge to find new favourites, new ways of putting together other items from your closet. I love the idea of combining your existing clothing in new and different ways.
If all else fails; you’ve cleaned out, got inspired, mixed things up, and even packed some tired stuff away, it might be time to shop. Maybe? Haha. But, before you start shopping, go back to the mood boards. Refer to them and start to put together outfits using the items you have. Notice what’s missing and put that on a list, then and only then, shop.
We’d love to hear from you! When was the last time you were in a style rut? Is it now??
