As most of you Aussie’s already, it’s finally winter!!! Which means freezing temperatures of about 20 degrees (just kidding, but not really). Anyway this winter we are here to help with keeping you warm on a budget. So this is for all you students and cheapskates out there freezing your arses off because you can’t or don’t want to pay for your heating bill.
HOW TO STAY WARM ON A BUDGET
- Buy an electric Blanket: they use very little energy and are great if you plan to stay in one place for a while. Available at Target and Kmart.
- Utilise the sun: keep curtains open when the sun is out to heat your home, especially with south-facing windows.
- Use your oven: using it as much as possible since it will keep your home warm. when you finish cooking leave the oven door open to take advantage of the heat.
- Cover bare floors: if you have heaps of cold flooring at your place your feet are bound to freeze, try to cover as much ground as possible with rugs and mats. There are many available at Kmart and Target.
- Use a hot water bottle or heat wheat pack: put them on your bed or by your feet to warm your bed and stay warm through the night, you can also use one to heat up your pyjamas before you put them on. Available at CrossRoads and Peter Alexander. Check out the Peter Alexander hot water bottles, they are super adorable!
- Shop smart for winter clothes: avoid cotton and try to get polyester or wool to stay warmer. Check out InStyles’s post on winter fashion to get some ideas.
- Buy a space heater: if you’re willing to pay for one, a space heating will keep you warm this winter. We found some cheap ones at Target and The Good Guys.
- Mobile Pet heaters?: You can snuggle up with your pets for extra warmth whilst showing them some love. They’re probably cold too.
Charlotte is a high school student who is trying to figure out how to survive in the real world. She knows that no-one has any clue about what they are doing. But maybe if she blogs about her experiences then maybe that will help other people like her. Right? It certainly couldn’t hurt.
